About SkinnyFest

How did SkinnyFest Get Started?

In the summer of 2012, a few good friends were contemplating the expense of attending a local Bluegrass Festival. Each year the group of fine folks had historically attended several Bluegrass festivals throughout Ohio and Kentucky. Supporting Bluegrass music is very important to these folks, but 2012 left a few of them with less disposable income than in years past. This group of musicians and music lovers thought that they might be able to create a Bluegrass music festival enviroment, for free, on their local property.

They invited family and friends to setup their campers and tents and played music all weekend, just as if they were at a "Big Box" Bluegrass Festival. The event was such a success that it was repeated in 2013. A good time was had by all, and thanks to a few local business sponsor donations, the crew was able to build a stage and hire a few professional groups the next year.

Where did the name "SkinnyFest" come from?

"Skinny" is the nickname that was given to Kenny Grooms years ago. Skinny has been a musician all of his life. He learned to play music first as a young boy from his mother Ethel. Ethel's father, George, played fiddle on the adjacent property, now Skinny's home, more than 100 years ago. Skinny has been playing Bluegrass music with a close nit group of friends since the 1980's. For nearly two decades, Skinny has been opening his home and garage weekly for an open jam session. He welcomes everyone in, and makes them feel comfortable, even if he has never met them before. Skinny is an unselfish, humble promoter of humanity and as such epitomizes the intent of the festival - SkinnyFest.
